Now and again, we’ve all smiled into the mirror and thought that our teeth just aren’t what they could be. Maybe they’ve become stained. Maybe you’ve chipped one or two. Or perhaps they are slightly crooked or you’ve got some big gaps. But what can you do about it?

If your teeth are stained, then you could try whitening. However, whitening does not always produce the results that people want or hope for. Maybe if you have crooked teeth, you can look into the possibility of orthodontic work. But using orthodontics to straighten your teeth can be a long process and, of course, not everyone is comfortable wearing braces unless they really, really need to.

So what you need is an option that can make a visible difference to your teeth without being too much of a major treatment – and this is the point where many people opt for dental veneers.

Veneers are a purely cosmetic treatment that, pure and simply, give you a better smile. Veneers are often favoured by Hollywood celebrities as they can create the impression of perfect teeth – without the laborious process of wearing a brace for a long period of time. So when you get snapped unexpectedly by lurking papparazzi, you know that your smile will always look great in the magazines the next day.

Veneers do not address the underlying problems with your teeth, they simply cover them. Therefore, they are not right for everyone. If you are seriously thinking about improving your smile, your first step must be a consultation with your dentist. Your dentist will be able to examine your teeth and give you a professional opinion on what the best (and most cost-effective) treatment might be. Your priority should always be looking after your natural teeth and ensuring that they remain healthy for the long term.

However, if the issue with your smile is primarily aesthetic, your dentist may agree that veneers are a good option. Normally, veneers will take two visits to the dentist to be fitted. On the first visit, your dentist will prepare your teeth using a ‘burr’, which roughens the surface of the teeth so that the veneers can adhere to them. During this visit, your dentist will also take a moulding of your teeth which is then sent to a laboratory, where the veneers are prepared to an exacting standard.

Your second appointment will normally be arranged for two to four weeks time. By this time, your veneers will have been prepared by the laboratory so your dentist can cement them in place. However, they will only be cemented in once you and your dentist are entirely happy with how they look and fit.

There are new developments in the area of dental veneers all the time. Dentists and patients now have a number of brand, products and materials to choose from, depending on their requirements and their budget.

Porcelain is one of the most widely used materials for veneers, as it is easily shaped and it is very durable. Porcelain veneers will often last up to ten years. Veneers can also be made from composite materials, which are a cheaper alternative. Composite veneers may only last two years.

Advances in technology means that there are now some veneers, under the brand name Cerec, that can literally be produced while you wait. Therefore, you will only require one trip to the dentist. Other brand name and materials have different characteristics and properties, so it is important to ask your dentist what they are recommending. Good quality materials are important, yet at the same time, we don’t all have a Hollywood celebrity’s budget1

If you want your veneers to last as long as possible, then you need to make sure that you look after. Your dentist will be able to give you advice on caring for them. The most important thing to remember is that your teeth only look better. In reality, it’s still your natural teeth underneath those veneers and they are still as likely to be attracting bacteria and plaque as they used to be. Cleaning your teeth regularly and visiting the dentist for check-ups are still important.

Everybody hates fillings, don’t they? In fact, most of us hate fillings so much that we can’t bear to think about them, talk about them, look at them or even ask our dentists about them. Most of us, when we visit the dentist for a routine check-up, will simply sit there, stare at the ceiling and hope that the dreaded ‘f’ word doesn’t crop up in conversation.

Well, the fact is that we usually will have to discuss the ‘f’ word with our dentists, because sooner or later, most of us will need a filling (even if it is just a little one). Fillings are one of the most routine dental procedures which most dentists perform every day. But because we hate fillings so much, many of us don’t know too much about them. And, there are definitely some things that you really should know about fillings…

The good news is that there is now a much more diverse range of fillings available to choose from than there ever has been in the past. The bad news is that new types of fillings (such as white fillings) are often more expensive than standard treatments and most dentists would only recommend the extra cost for a very visible cavity. That’s why the majority of patients with a tooth cavity will usually end up with an ‘amalgam’.

Amalgam fillings are the traditional type of fillings that are usually black in colour. They are made from an amalgamation of a number of different metals which usually include tin, silver, copper and mercury – hence the colour. While amalgams are not the most visually attractive option for filling a cavity, they have the advantage of being very durable. This means that they can withstand the constant demands of chewing or tooth-grinding without breaking down or coming loose.

So amalgams have their plus points – of course, they’ve been used by dentists to fill cavities for decades, so you would expect them to. However, there is also one very important negative issue surrounding amalgams. Many people are against amalgam fillings because they contain mercury – which is very toxic to human beings.

The debate around the toxicity of the mercury in amalgam fillings has been raging for several years. According to the most recent research, around 8 million cavities in the UK are filled with amalgams each year. However, anti-amalgam campaigners (of which there is a growing number) claim that the mercury in amalgams is responsible for a variety of health issues, from headaches to Alzheimer’s disease.

So let’s look at the two sides of the debate. On one side are the authorities such as the FDA and the British Dental Association, who claim that the mercury in amalgams is tightly bonded into a compound with the other elements in your filling, so it poses no threat to your health. On the other side are a band of alternative therapists, dentists and even national governments such as Norway and Denmark, who believe that amalgams release mercury vapours which can contaminate your bloodstream. In Norway, Denmark and a number of other countries, amalgams are no longer recommended by dentists.

If you are concerned about amalgam fillings and the effect that they could have on or your children’s health, then there are a number of steps that you can take. First of all, speak to your dentist and find out their views on the subject. There are now many dentists in the UK who choose not to work with amalgams and prefer to only recommend other types of filling.

When you talk to your dentist, ask him or her about other options for fillings cavities. You may be surprised by how many choices you have. Whereas they can be more expensive than the cheaper amalgam, you could talk to your dentist about composite resins, glass or ceramic fillings – none of which contain mercury.

Finally, what can you do if you already have amalgam fillings – after all, most of us with NHS dentists probably do. It is possible to have you amalgam fillings replaced. Once again, talk to your dentist who will be able to explain much more about the procedure. There is a standard protocol involved which will ensure that the mercury is kept bonded within the amalgam while it is removed – ensuring that the filling can be replaced safely.

Let’s start with the obvious question: what is oral thrush? Everybody has a certain amount of thrush in their mouths, including babies. It is caused by a fungus called candida which, under certain conditions, turns into the thrush infection in the mouth.

While oral thrush is correctly described as an infection, it cannot be transmitted from person to person as it is not contagious. Oral thrush occurs because a person may have a weakened immune system, an underlying illness or if the oral environment changes (for example, if not enough saliva is being produced). These sorts of alterations can cause the candida fungus to turn into thrush.

For the main part, oral thrush is not harmful. It is primarily manifested as white or yellowish spots in the mouth and in the throat. These spots can be scraped away and they may cause some pain and discomfort in the mouth. The infected areas of the mouth can appear inflamed or irritated and a sensation similar to a slight burning has been described.

One of the biggest factors is causing oral thrust in adults is dentures, particularly if the dentures are ill-fitting or not being looked after properly. To help minimise oral thrush, denture wearers should keep their dentures clean and follow their dentist’s advice on looking after their dentures and maintaining their oral hygiene. If your dentures are ill-fitting, you may need to visit your dentist to have a new pair made which fit the shape of your mouth better. This will help to reduce the level of oral thrush.

Of course, it is not simply denture wearers who suffer from oral thrush. Newborn babies are particularly susceptible, as are adults with diabetes, drug problems, poor diets and immune deficiencies.

In severe cases of oral thrush, you should make an appointment to see your doctor. Your doctor will usually be able to prescribe anti-fungal medicines, such as fluconazole, to ease the condition. These medicines are available in the form of tablets, lozenges and gels. It is also important to remember that oral thrush, in rare cases, can also be a symptom of an underlying illness. In particular, it can be a sign that AIDS or cancer are present. Anti-fungal treatments will also help in these cases, both to treat oral thrush and to prevent it from occurring.

In most cases, however, the treatment of thrush will focus more on finding and removing the cause. For example, oral thrush can be caused by a poor diet, in which case your doctor will probably recommend improvements in that area. Once the cause has been removed, the thrush can be treated effectively with anti-fungal medicines and it should not return. Smoking can also be a cause of oral thrush.

There are certain groups of people for whom oral thrush can create increased complications, above and beyond the soreness that comes with the infection. For example, diabetes sufferers can have increased glucose in their saliva which can cause very high levels of thrush to occurr. For diabetes sufferers, oral thrush can escalate into a serious condition which infects the skin, the blood and the internal organs. If the symptoms of thrush are present, they should have them treated as a matter of urgency.

Newly born babies are also susceptible to thrush – research shows that around one in every seven babies suffers from oral thrush. These are not usually serious bouts of thrush and often they are painless, so the baby is not even aware of the condition. Other cases can cause some slight pain and discomfort, but it is very rarely a serious condition. Usually, your doctor will treat the thrush with an anti-fungal gel which can be applied directly to the affected area.

Nobody is entirely sure why newly born babies suffer from oral thrush. Doctors recommend ensuring that your baby maintains a healthy diet. You must also make sure that bottles, dummies and other teething toys, are sterilised. On occasions, babies that have oral thrush can find it difficult to feed. The infection can also boomerang backwards and forwards between mother and baby during breast-feeding. This can cause the mother to have pain, itchiness and flaky skin around the breasts.

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite’ material is used instead of porcelain.

When would I need a veneer?

Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten front teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

What are the advantages of veneers?

Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they are very thin and are held in place by a special strong bond (rather like super-glue) very little preparation of the tooth is needed.

How are teeth prepared for a veneer?

Some of the shiny outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed, to make sure that the veneer can be bonded permanently in place later. The amount of enamel removed is tiny and will be the same as the thickness of the veneer to be fitted, so that the tooth stays the same size. A local anaesthetic (injection) may be used to make sure that there is no discomfort, but often this is not necessary. Once the tooth has been prepared, the dentist will take an ‘impression’ (mould). This will be given to the dental technician, along with any other information needed to make the veneer. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to make sure that the veneer will look entirely natural.

How long will it take?

A veneer takes at least two visits: the first to prepare the tooth and to match the shade, and the second to fit it. Before bonding it in place, your dentist will show you the veneer on your tooth to make sure you are happy with it. Bonding a veneer in place is done with a special adhesive, which holds it firmly on the tooth.

Will I need a temporary veneer between visits?

Because the preparation of the tooth is so slight you will probably not need a temporary veneer. The tooth will look very much the same after preparation, but will feel slightly less smooth.

What happens after the veneer is fitted?

Only minor adjustments can be made to the veneer after it is fitted. It is usually best to wait a little while to get used to it before any changes are made. Your dentist will probably want to check and polish it a week or so after it is fitted, and make sure that you are happy with it.

How much will it cost?

The costs for this treatment can vary from practice to practice so it is important to discuss charges and treatment options with your dentist before starting treatment.

How long will a veneer last?

Veneers should last for many years; but they can chip or break, just as your own teeth can. Your dentist will tell you how long each individual veneer should last. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.

What about alternatives?

A natural-coloured filling material can be used for minor repairs to front teeth. This is excellent where the tooth supports the filling, but may not work so well for broken tooth corners. There will always be a join between the tooth and the filling material. Crowns are used for teeth which need to be strengthened – either because they have broken, have been weakened by a very large filling, or have had root canal treatment.

Dental veneers are expensive, but they are a solution to many solutions whereby the dental veneers cost are justifiable. Most people are the results far outweigh the dental veneers cost.

Dental veneers are used as a solution to cracks, chips, incorrect spacing, skew tooth alignment and worn tooth enamels. Dental veneers cost depends on factors such as the dentist’s rates, the technical skills and artistry of the veneers, the location, materials and the number of veneers required. Your dental insurance may not cover cosmetic procedures, which would add to your payment.

Resin veneers are a lot less costly than porcelain veneers that may cost anywhere from $900 per tooth to $2,500 and are expected to last ten to fifteen years, whereas resin veneers last about 5-7 years and cost between $250-%1500 each. Some dentists are happy to offer easy payment terms for cosmetic procedures.

Usually a dental veneer procedure is completed within 2 sessions spaced over 6 weeks. The procedure includes a lot of examination and preparation, hence visits could be quite long. During examination, many factors are considered and this is essential as oral well-being needs to be assessed and problems addressed before treatment can commence.

The first step in the procedure is local anaesthetic to dull the pain and discomfort whilst veneer is applied. The tooth is then reshaped slightly using a small handheld cutting device that rotates to create the best possible fit. This rotational device is called a bur.

Your dentists will then make an impression of the teeth which is used to make a mould of your mouth. The impression is then sent to an external dental laboratory that will professionally create your veneers. Some dentists’ rooms have dental labs and technicians as well as CAD/CAM technology in-house which means that everything can be done in one visit, but most work with external labs.

If an outside lab is going to create your veneers, you may get temporary veneers at the first visit. This will give you an idea of the outcome you can expect. If veneer is going to be placed on more than one tooth and enough enamel remains, your dentist may choose to save you the additional cost of temporary veneers. Shaping the teeth may leave them more sensitive to cold and heat. This should ease off with the placement of the permanent veneers.

Ceramic veneers due to their glass like nature resemble enamel. When ceramic veneers are struck by light they are not reflected immediately. It actually penetrates the enamel and is later reflected by the opaque tooth. This adds lustre to the teeth. This gives patients really white shiny smiles and is well worth the investment for the aesthetic results achieved.

Once the permanent veneers are placed, no recovery period is needed. Your dentist will also discuss with you the best ways to look after the veneers to maximize their longevity.

Although dental veneers cost a lot, their cosmetic purpose outweighs their cost, especially on visible teeth. There is absolutely no doubt about that!

Nowadays the quest for white teeth is everyone’s struggle. It seems that they are not contented with their white teeth. The color of teeth of celebrities and film stars are the envy of everybody. Most people observe proper dental hygiene through visiting dentist at least twice a year and others uses whitening toothpaste. Individuals who can afford the technology seek information about cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry includes several procedures including the cosmetic dentistry veneers.

Cosmetic dentistry veneer is used to cover up yellowish teeth with pure white porcelain cap. A dental veneer is set on the enamel of the tooth thus, remarkable restoration is provided. Dental technicians together with the porcelain strips to correct even tiniest imperfection construct this porcelain cap. Porcelain veneers can give every client a dental make over however, they are expensive and the frequent clients are celebrity. Porcelain is a brittle material but it adds strength to a veneer that yields completely beautiful and natural looking teeth. The very high cost of porcelain veneers is compensated by its effect that lasts for about ten to fifteen years.

A veneer is a time consuming process that requires several visits because it have to be molded perfectly to the size and shape of your teeth. Although porcelain veneer has crushing strength ability, foods that requires twisting or gnawing action should be avoided. Apart from the good side of using veneer, there are also disadvantages using porcelain veneers. One is the potential to break off and cannot be repaired that is why the only resort is to have new one. Secondly, the procedure is not a reversible process because a small amount of enamel from your teeth is removed before setting a porcelain veneer. That is why your teeth will be aesthetically unpleasant without veneers and tooth sensitivity increases especially to cold and hot beverages but may be momentary.

Another type of veneer is the composite or direct veneer that is likewise too expensive and you may spend for each tooth hundred dollars. Each composite veneer is applied to the tooth separately and directly, however, the procedure can be done in one session. Inconvenience about this veneer is the painful effect to the patient while undergoing the process.

Cosmetic dentistry veneer is more advantageous than dental crowns because there is no need for tooth extraction. Veneer is bonded on the front teeth for cosmetic restoration; however, minor contouring work is required. It can be used together with crown for those individual with too damaged teeth.

For most people the disadvantage of veneers is outweighed by the benefits it offers. This procedure will change your outlook in life. It will boost your self-confidence and you can proudly flash your sparkling smile anytime anywhere. To obtain this success and satisfaction, it is just right to seek advice about cosmetic dentistry to know the right procedure that suits you.

Using Da Vinci veneers is an interesting way of veneering or improving the appearance of teeth when not much reduction of the tooth structure is required. It is a way that is relatively easy to perform, and often does not require anesthetic.

They are very thin veneers applied to the surface of the teeth to improve the color, shape, and to mask hypercalcification or white spots on broken teeth. They are used to mask anything where the tooth structure is not particularly aesthetic, when the patient wants to improve the overall appearance of his smile.

Irregular Teeth

In the case of teeth that are irregular and crowded, sometimes you cannot use Da Vinci veneers because the tooth structure itself has to be in alignment with the the final position of the tooth. If they stick out too much or tilt, meaning that just one edge of the tooth protrudes too much, you cannot put a veneer on that. If you do, the tooth will stick out even more.

Usually it takes just two visits to apply Da Vinci veneers. The first visit is pure preparation, including making an impression of the tooth or teeth. Often there is no need for a temporary veneer as there is not much tooth reduction.

Lab Tests

Then it takes about two weeks of laboratory time before the veneers are delivered and bonded in place. That is a special process where we use an adhesive that bonds chemically to the underside of the veneer which makes it strong.

The underside has been prepared to be receptive to bonding. The bonding solution or cement integrates with the underside surface of the veneer and the outer surface of the teeth, to make it optimal for attachment.

Generally anesthetic is not required to apply Da Vinci veneers as long as the teeth do not require reduction by cutting with a drill. And even if the teeth require a great deal of reduction, we can numb the area before applying a local anesthetic. That involves an almost painless injection to make the teeth completely numb. So even if we have to do a lot of reduction, it is painless.

Appearance Varies

The appearance of veneers is determined by many factors. One factor involved is the experience of the practitioner and the quality of the dental lab that the veneer is sent to. Dental ceramicists vary widely in their ability to create porcelain, which can affect the appearance of the finished veneer.

Another is the inherent condition of the teeth. If the underlying color is very dark and we are trying to improve that color, we have to match that color exactly.

The bonding material itself is used for that purpose. It has varying degrees of opacity. The darker a tooth is, the more opacity we need to mask that darkness, so it does not shine through the very thin porcelain veneer.

The greater the opacity, the less there will be translucency. The translucency and shape of the teeth determine whether the veneers will look natural or not. A dentist should never promise a patient that the end result will be completely natural, but it will be much better than it was.

Veneers are usually made from porcelain and are thin coverings that are custom-made to fit over existing teeth. They are held in place by a special resin and result in durable coverings that can be a cosmetic fix for spaces in between teeth, broken or chipped teeth, stained fillings, correcting crooked or uneven teeth, or even whitening.

Veneers are fitted by a dentist in an almost painless procedure. Once fitted, they last many years and look completely natural. After 5 to 10 years, the wearer should replace their veneers.
Procedure Information

The dentist will remove only the tiniest amount of natural tooth structure if any before attaching the veneers. The veneers are strong and durable and the color should remain unstained. A resin filling can be used when only a small amount of the tooth needs replacing or repair, or a full crown might be used if there was a root canal treatment or if all the enamel was lost. The dentist takes an impression of the tooth to make an exact replica.
Recovery Time

Having veneers placed on your teeth is painless and they can last for years, depending on how well you take care of them. They are quite resistant to stains and chipping, within reason. Veneers are cared for in the same way as natural teeth and should be subject to regular cleaning and dentist check-ups.

Veneers provide a beautiful smile and some people have them added even when they have no problems other than a bit of staining. The white look of the veneers normally lasts for the life of the veneers, which is about 5 to 10 years.

Dental veneers, also known as dental laminates or porcelain laminates, are thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the front of the teeth. These are widely used in cosmetic dentistry to make a person’s smile look and seem whiter and brighter.

At first, you may think that porcelain laminates are quite fragile to put over your teeth, but once these thin porcelain shells are properly bonded to teeth, they become practically like second enamel and becomes strong and resistant to cracking and damage.

Dental veneers are not for everyone. But more and more people are finding use for these teeth laminates. To determine whether these are feasible solutions for your dental problems or worries, you should talk to your doctor and discuss the particular course of action. It is important that before you get veneers, you have to know exactly what your chosen direction entails.

To help you out, here are some important information that can help you make up your mind about getting dental laminates.
Getting Dental Veneers

A few good reasons to get dental veneers:

* Why Get Dental Laminates?
* Benefits of Getting Dental Laminates
* How to Take Care of Your Dental Laminates

1. Why Get Dental Laminates?

There are many reasons why various people get porcelain shells for their teeth. These laminates help people overcome problems with discolored teeth or to cover up teeth stains.

Sometimes, they are also used to cover worn teeth or even chipped ones; these are mostly cases where the enamel has already gotten damaged by wear and tear. It could also be a feasible option for teeth that are not properly aligned. It could also be a more favorable option for people who need but are not willing to get orthodontic treatment.

2. Benefits of Getting Dental Laminates

A lot of people prefer getting dental laminates instead of pursuing other forms of dental treatment. Some corrective dental treatments usually take a long time and a lot of effort and, not to mention, money. But dental veneers, despite a high initial cost, can provide an easy way to get a great-looking set of pearly whites. Aside from this, people who have gotten dental laminates have attested to experiencing long-term benefits.

First, not only will you look great, but dental porcelain laminates also look very realistic, so even when light strikes the surface of your tooth, it will not bounce and give away the secret behind your perfect smile. The natural enamel of your teeth is translucent and has almost the same properties as the artificial porcelain shells used in making laminates, so your secret is definitely safe.

But unlike the natural enamel of your teeth, porcelain is resistant to stains, so with your laminates, you don’t have to worry about coffee stains and other discoloration that may occur.

3. How to Take Care of Your Veeners

Dental laminates vary in the time period they last. Generally, they should last for several years, but only with proper care. Ten years can pass and your dental veneers will still be in perfect condition if you know exactly how to take care of them. Since your laminates will be as good as actual teeth, you should still practice good dental hygiene and oral care. Also, make sure to get them checked up regularly. And even if they are resistant to stains, you should still cut back on foods and drinks that can cause heavy staining on teeth.

Also, even if they become strong when bonded to teeth, these laminates are still made of porcelain and can still break in case excessive force is applied. You should also try to control grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw to ensure that your veneers will be perfectly safe. Constant teeth grinding and clenching may weaken the porcelain shells.
How to Get Dental Veneers

Your dentist is the best person who can tell you if you need porcelain laminates or if they could work for you. If you have decided to get it done, the first step is to undergo an examination which involves taking photos of your teeth and getting x-rays. Then, your dentist will make dental molds or impressions to make a plaster cast that copies your mouth.
